An example: purchase ordering could offer the employee to raise their own requests while a similar interface permits their manager to authorise the order. This can all be handled using the similar security that Amazon.com would use for their credit card payments. The order can be monitored right through to delivery without a paper based trail proving to be more time, and cost efficient than other methods. There are no limits as to what is possible with an ordinary web browser and an economy sized PC. Our biggest project to date is BarServer.com. This LAMP based project is to develop a POS (Point Of Sale) system which is driven entirely using Open Source tools such as Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP in addition to DHTML using Javascript and CSS. The combination of technology communicates with touch-screen dumb cashtills to perform automated stock and staff time management from a central server. It is so far proving to be more cost efficient and more reliable than other existing MS-DOS based platforms. Application Service Providers are not an entirely new concept and have been used by Yahoo to provide email, calander, address book, and career help/advice. Salesforce.com also provides CRM services (Customer Relationship Management) to over 9,000 businesses using a business model similar to this. Dell also offer a method for the user to design their own PC online reducing costs and speeding up delivery using technologies based around the same principles. Other well known providers of CRM are Siebel CRM and Sage CRM. You can read more information on ASP at internetnews.com or Yahoo's Directory of Application Service Providers. |
